Asir Mountains	Mountain range in S.W. Saudi Arabia.
Ascension Island	Island in the South Atlantic Ocean
Atlas Mountains	East-west mountain range in N.W. Africa.
Azores	Group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean.
Baikal, Lake	Freshwater lake in central Siberia.
Balearic Islands	The islands of Majorca, Minorca and Ibiza in the western Mediterranean.
Baluchistan	Land of the Baluch people, split between Iran and Pakistan.
Balkans	Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania; also a mountain range in Bulgaria.
Bavaria	Southernmost state of Germany.
Bessarabia	South-western area of Ukraine bordering Romania; includes part of Moldova (Moldavia).
Bukhara	Area and town to the west of Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
Canary Islands	The islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote off the northwest coast of Morocco.
Cape Verde Islands	Mid-Atlantic islands off the west coast of Africa.
Caucasus	East-west mountain range between the Caspian and Black Seas.
Crimea	Peninsula in the northern Black Sea, southern Ukraine.
Cuenca	Province in eastern Spain.
Dagestan	Eastern portion of the Caucasus bordering the Caspian Sea.
Fergana	Large valley and town along the western edge of the Tian Shan (east of Bukhara), Uzbekistan.
Galapagos Islands	Group of Pacific islands west of Ecuador, South America.
Granada	Province in southern Spain.
Heilongjiang Province	Province in N.E. China; formally part of Manchuria.
Himalaya	East-west mountain range between India and China.

Mauritania	Old name for area of N.W. Africa roughly comprising Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco, as used in this work (=Mauretania); also a modern independent state in southern N.W. Africa, but outside the scope of this work.
Mesopotamia	Plain of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, Iraq.
Middle East	Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Iraq, Iran and the Arabian Peninsula.
Nei Mongol Province	Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China.
New World	North and South America; western hemisphere.
Ningxia Province	Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China.

Pamirs	North-south mountain range south of the Tian Shan range; western Himalaya.
Patagonia	Southern Argentina (New World).
Pontic Mountains	East-west mountain range in northern Turkey bordering the Black Sea (adj. Pontine).
Pyrenees	East-west mountain range separating France and Spain.
Qinghai Province	Province in central northern China containing Lake Qinghai.
Rif Mountains	Small mountain range in northern Morocco opposite Spain.

Volga River	Large river in European Russia which flows into the Caspian Sea.
Xizang Province	Province in southern China; formerly Tibet.
Xinjiang Province	Province in western China (Chinese Turkestan).
Yemen	Country at the south-western tip of the Arabian Peninsula.
Yunnan Province	Province in southern China bordering on Myanmar.
